WaterFires of Providence

Updated: Nov 14, 2021

The WaterFires in Providence are a must do event in the fall.

Started in 1994 by Barnaby Evans, the WaterFires is praised by people all over the world as a work of art symbolizing Providence renaissance. If you haven’t been before, the show consists of torch-lit boats traveling down the river and lighting fires along the way in the stands that are permanently planted in the river. Since starting the show has grown to over 80 bonfires over three of Providence’s rivers. The attraction has captured the attention of over 10 million visitors and is a great event that highlights the capital city’s history and charm.

During the months of September and October, they do full and partial lightings every Saturday night. This event draws in a large crowd each weekend, so the fires aren’t the only thing to do downtown on these nights. On the night I visited, there was a flea market with streets of vendors of all kinds. From food to art these local sellers had something for all ages. It was fun to browse and a great way to highlight local businesses at such a great event. Other weekends they have food truck festivals and depending on the weekend sometimes have specific themes.

While they’re over for now, be sure to catch the final lighting of the 2021 season on December 4th!
